Please call us today at 210-696-2563 to learn more about bruxism in San Antonio, Texas, and schedule your child’s consultation with Dr. Peter Gurr and Dr. Scott Jensen.
Bruxism may be caused by a number of physical or psychological factors, such as jaw misalignment, stress, or traumatic brain injury. Children with developmental disorders or brain injuries are usually at greater risk for bruxism. Symptoms of bruxism include:
- Frequent complaints of headaches
- Injured teeth and gums
- Loud grinding and clocking sounds
- Frequent tightening or clenching of the jaw muscles
- Complaints about painful jaw muscles
- Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold foods
- Excessive tooth wear
- Chipped teeth
In most cases, children will stop grinding by age 13. Our pediatric dentists monitor your child’s mouth carefully, and if needed will develop a customized treatment plan to prevent damage. Common treatments include altering the biting surface of teeth with crowns, and beginning orthodontic treatment. If bruxism appears to be caused by stress, our pediatric specialists may recommend relaxation exercises, professional therapy, or special exercises. In more extreme cases, our dentists may recommend a night guard to protect your child’s teeth while he or she is asleep.
