Caring For Your Baby’s Smile From Birth

From birth, your baby’s smile needs regular oral care, even before the teeth erupt. We can help you take good care of your child’s smile to help them develop effective oral health:

Gums: The gums need to be cleaned even before the teeth erupt. This can be done by using a clean, damp cloth or gauze to wipe the gums following a feeding.

Baby teeth: Brush your child’s teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and plain water first. Don’t put your child to bed with a bottle of juice or milk or else the sugars can linger on the gums and lips and cause tooth decay to any erupting teeth.

Toothpaste: When your child is about two years old, they can brush with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, though they will likely require your assistance with brushing until about the age of six. You can encourage these skills by allowing your child to brush their own teeth under your supervision.

Dental floss: Flossing should start as soon as two teeth erupt beside each other, and most children need help flossing up to 10 years of age.

Your child can enjoy their smile for a lifetime if they have good enough health. Please feel free to contact The Dentists for Kids at 210-696-2563 today to ask our dentist about your child’s oral health in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Peter Gurr and our team would be happy to meet with you!
